CIOT’S SUCCESS COULD BE DEFINED IN A SIMPLE PROMISE: THE AMERICAN DREAM. DRIVEN BY THAT DREAM, AND VISIONARY AMBITIONS, THIS FAMILY BUSINESS HAS BEEN GROWING FOR 67 YEARS.
An immigrant family from Italy settles in Canada, works hard and builds a solid company that becomes one of the leaders in its field. No, it’s not the pitch for a new movie, and it’s not a fairy tale. This is the story of Ciot.
In 1931, Giovanni Battista Ciot left Italy for Canada, leaving behind everything but his ambition, and a deep conviction that this new adventure would allow him to fulfil his dreams. He settled first in Ontario, then moved to Montreal for his first job … installing terrazzo and ceramic tile. In 1950, he opened a business at 9225 boulevard Saint-Laurent, manufacturing and installing marble and terrazzo. Ciot still makes tile there, and it is at this address where his eldest child, Margaret, came to work as a young girl.
Giuseppe Panzera was another Italian immigrant, who arrived in Montreal at the age of 16. He, too, got a job laying tile, and ended up starting a company with his brother and brother-in-law. One of his clients was Ciot; that’s where he met Margaret and they married in 1968! Around that time, Giovanni’s son-in-law took over the company, pursuing the same dreams his father-in-law held dear. To this day, he has continued to grow the business, turning it into one of Canada’s largest ceramic tile, natural stone and plumbing accessories companies, with stores in Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, Brossard, Mississauga, Vaughan, Detroit and New York. A visit to their website gives you an idea of the vast selection of medium- and high-end products Ciot sells: floor and wall tiles, mosaic tile, plumbing accessories, Leed-certified products and outdoor stone and tile … imported from Italy, of course, but also made in the U.S., China, and, right here in Quebec! The online gallery is impressive, but nothing beats a visit to a store for a sense of the variety of products on offer. Custom mosaics, for example, are becoming more popular each month, thanks to the work of mosaic artist Igor Marziali. And service is truly impeccable, no doubt due, in part, to the stability of the staff. Some employees have been with the company for decades, and lest we forget that Ciot is a family business: Kristina is VP Marketing and Purchasing, Michael is VP and Director of Finance, Claudia, is Merchandising Manager, and then there are all the nieces and nephews!>
While the Ciot ship runs smoothly now, the future is even more promising: new products are added every month, and new projects keep on coming. You could say that Ciot’s success is written in stone.
